The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group E, Spain will be facing their arch-rivals Germany. Following with the Asian Cup 2019 finalists Japan and the winner of the intercontinental playoff match between Costa Rica and New Zealand planned for June will join them.

The draw has resulted in a rematch of the 2010 FIFA World Cup semifinals, in which a Carles Puyol goal propelled Spain to the tournament final in Johannesburg, where they went on to win the renowned trophy.

Japan will also have a chance to advance to the knockout stage, having qualified for the World Cup last 16 three times in the past five years.

Costa Rica or New Zealand will compete for the final place in Group E, beginning their game versus Luis Enrique’s Spain on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Each of the four teams will play the other three nations in a round-robin style. The points from those three group-stage matches are used to determine the group rankings – three points for a victory, one point for a tie, and none for a defeat.

The single-game knockouts are held for the top two clubs in each group based on total points. If two clubs are tied on points, the first tiebreaker is goal differential, followed by goals scored. A different set of tiebreakers is used if teams are tied in those areas.

Spain is still in a transitional period as they prepare for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as they want to repeat the success they had in the 2010 World Cup.

Japan’s national team has never advanced beyond the Round of 16 in the World Cup, but they will be hoping for a longer run this year.
