Gujarat Giants will be led by Beth Mooney in the first WPL season

During the first Women’s Premier League(WPL), Australian batter Beth Mooney was selected as Gujarat Giants’ captain. Mooney will re-team with her old teammate Rachael Haynes, the head coach of the Giants, after she hit the game-winning run of 74 runs without being out. Following her record-breaking sixth victory as Australia’s captain in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. On Monday, Beth Mooney, a star batter, was chosen to serve as the Gujarat Giants (GT) franchise manager in the first Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The sixth Women’s T20 World Cup triumph for Australia. India’s all-rounder Sneh Rana has been chosen as vice-captain. In a statement, Mooney stated, “I am honored to be offered the chance to coach the Adani Gujarat Giants in the historic Women’s Premier League’s inaugural edition in 2023. The team is eager to get things underway as quickly as possible and play winning cricket for the whole of the first WPL season. It will be wonderful to have Sneh as my deputy and Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes, and Nooshin Al Khadeer as essential team members.” Mooney will serve as the team captain for the first time in her illustrious Twenty20 career.

At the WPL player auction in February, Mooney was among the dozens of elite female cricket players worldwide who won contracts worth tens of thousands of dollars. According to analysts, the WPL has the potential to be a moneymaker like the men’s Indian Premier League and might revolutionize women’s soccer in the coming years. Mooney expressed joy at being offered the chance to captain the squad in the first competition. She said that the team is eager to get things going as soon as possible and play an exciting and productive style of cricket in the first WPL season, which will hopefully help us win the trophy.

In addition to winning the ODI World Cup in 2022 and the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games last year, Mooney was a member of Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning sides in 2018 and 2020. Three years ago, she was named Player of the Tournament. Mooney again lifted the trophy in 2023. She is the only batter from Australia with two T20I hundreds and has won three Women’s Big Bash League championships. Mooney will be taking on the role of team captain for the first time in an international T20 league. She led London Spirit in runs scored during the women’s Hundred last year. She has played for Perth Scorchers, whose captain is Sophie Devine, and Brisbane Heat, whose main leader has been Kirby Short, in the Women’s Big Bash League, where she has only captained in a few games.

Rana returned to the Indian team in 2021, and this year he participated in the T20 World Cup semi-final, which India barely lost against Australia. She played for Velocity in the Women’s T20 Competition and has represented India in 25 T20 Internationals, 22 ODIs, and one Test.
